Answer: Our most commonly turf sold is Sir Walter Buffalo Grass.

Answer: New grass should be watered twice a day to keep the top two inches of soil moist at all times. Water daily until all of the grass seeds have germinated, then it will be ready to begin a regular watering schedule

Answer: Your grass might not have actually died in the winter months. Sometimes, grass can just become dormant, meaning that it protects itself from extreme temperatures by turning brown to conserve water. Dead and dormant grass look very similar. It may be difficult to tell dormant grass from dead grass until spring arrives.

Keep watering your grass throughout the winter months. If your grass turns green when spring comes along with warmer temperatures it has not died, it has just been dormant.

Answer: Forest Mulch has 2 forms:

  1. Arborists Forest Mulch Made from trees and shrubs put through a wood chipper by arborists. Wood chippers have sharp knives that carve up the material to produce chips usually around 15-30mm and chopped up leaf matter mixed in.
  2. Double Grind Forest Mulch – Made from vegetation piled up by excavation clearing work , transfer station collection of vegetation or stockpiling of vegetation by Arborists . These piles are then processed by a Horizontal Grinder or Hammer Mill to produce a pulverized, mulch with a combination of fines, course and stringy constituents.

Both mulch options are great!

Arborists Mulch has less fines and less larger and stringy particles so it breaks down and feeds plants and improves soil at a slower rate than Double grind mulch. It is better at suppressing the growth of weeds and is more popular as an aesthetics improver. Won’t hold well on steep slopes.

Double Grind Mulch is best for improving soil quality at the fastest rate, not as good for weed suppression as a result, excellent for erosion protection as it holds well on steep slopes due to the stringy particles. Considered not as aesthetic as other mulches but some may argue that point.

Both forest mulch varieties are excellent at soil moisture retention and greatly reduce the need for irrigation!

Summary – Best all round value is the double grind as it is a soil improver and plant feeder combined with moisture retainer and weed suppressor all in one. If aesthetics are important a light covering of prettier mulch could be placed on top. If soil is already in great condition, weed suppression and aesthetics are paramount then Arborist mulch is best for you . ( except for steep sloping gardens)
